‘日出ずる国’から‘日の沈む国’へー

日本からモロッコへ壁画制作の旅の中、紡ぎ出された石を描く意味

異国の石と石、混ぜ合わせて生まれるエネルギーを描く

– Introduction for SUN –

ライフワークとして集めた石を組み合わせて新たな物体として描く’OBJECT’というシリーズ作品。
それ以前は抽象的な絵を描いてきて、壁画を描きに行く先々で趣味として石を拾い集めていました。
ある時、流れをつけたり画面を覆う様に描いていた自分の絵を「もっと集中した力強い塊の様なものを描きたい」と思い、考えていく中で手元にある石たちを見て「この小石を壁に大きく描いたら魔法みたいで楽しいかも！」とこのシリーズを描き出しました。

壁やキャンバスで少しずつシリーズを進めていく中でぼんやりと目標にしていた「日本から持って行った石と現地で見つけた石を組み合わせて描く」ことが初めて実現できたのが5月に参加したモロッコ、ラバトでの JIDAR Street Art Festivalでした。
「違う場所で違う時間にできたであろう石たちを組み合わせて描くことで、’距離’と’時間’を圧縮して生まれるエネルギーの塊を描く」
現地で出会う人たちに自分の絵をきちんと説明できないと、と改めて考え直したコンセプトを伝え、ラバトに到着したその日にビーチに連れて行ってもらい石を拾いました。
制作が始まり滞在するホテルから壁のある現場まで車で移動中、海沿いの道を走っているとラバトには島が無く、視界の端から端まで綺麗な水平線が続いていることにびっくりしました。
アシスタントのアダマ（日本のカルチャーが好きなラバトの大学生）にその事を伝えると「日本は’日出る国’って意味だよね。知ってる？モロッコはアラビア語で　’日が沈む国（マグレブ）’って意味なんだよ」と教えてくれました。（モロッコはアラビア語圏の最も西に位置するのでそう呼ばれるそう）
日本から持ってきた石とモロッコで見つけた石を描き、先述したコンセプトを表現していた僕は時間と距離、どちらにも大きく関係する’太陽が結ぶ2国’という関係性に衝撃を受けました。
考えていた意味に呼ばれてそこにいるように感じた旅。壁画を完成させ帰国してからもずっとこの事を反芻しています。
今回の新作となる 10枚のOBJECT も全てモロッコから持ち帰った石と日本の石を描いています。
日々昇って沈む太陽。その先に確かに存在するものに思いを馳せてみてください。

同じく日本から JIDAR に参加していたかつまたひでゆきさんとモロッコで企てて帰国後に描いた共作も初お披露目。ぜひお楽しみください！

1988年大分県出生、滋賀県在住のペインター。
主に自然の中の物質やそれらを含む風景の色や形、光の反射、屈折などに焦点を当て、
収集したイメージを画面上で交錯させ抽象的に繋ぎ止める。
近年はシェイプドキャンバスに光のイメージを重ね合わせて描く’ shape of lights’、
ライフワークとして収集した石を組み合わせ新たな物体として描く‘OBJECT’
などのシリーズ作品を展開。
2025年5月、モロッコ ラバトで行われたJIDAR Street Art Festivalに参加。

From the Land of the Rising Sun to the Land of the Setting Sun—

The meaning of depicting stones woven during a mural-making journey from Japan to Morocco

Depicting the energy born from blending stones of foreign lands

– Introduction for SUN –

A series titled ‘OBJECT’ created by combining stones collected as a Life’s work into new objects.
Before that, I had been painting abstract works and collecting stones as a hobby wherever I went to create murals.
At one point, while painting with flowing strokes and covering the canvas, I thought, “I want to paint something more concentrated and powerful, like a solid mass.” As I pondered this, I looked at the stones I had gathered and thought, “What if I painted these pebbles large on a wall? It might be magical and fun!” That’s how I began this series.

While gradually progressing my series on walls and canvases, the vague goal I’d held—to create art combining stones brought from Japan with stones found locally—was finally realized at the JIDAR Street Art Festival in Rabat, Morocco, which I participated in this May.
“By combining stones that likely formed in different places and times, I aim to depict a mass of energy born from compressing ‘distance’ and ‘time’.”
I revisited this concept, realizing I needed to properly explain my work to the people I’d meet locally. On the very day I arrived in Rabat, I was taken to the beach to collect stones.
As production began and I drove from my hotel to the wall site along the coastal road, I was struck by how Rabat has no islands—just a beautiful horizon stretching from edge to edge.
When I mentioned this to my assistant Adama (a Rabat university student who loves Japanese culture), he told me, “Japan means ‘Land of the Rising Sun,’ right? Did you know? In Arabic, Morocco means ‘the land where the sun sets’ (Maghreb).” (Morocco is called this because it’s the westernmost point of the Arabic-speaking world.)
As I painted stones brought from Japan and stones found in Morocco, expressing the concept mentioned earlier, I was struck by the relationship between the two countries connected by the sun – a connection profoundly tied to both time and distance.
It felt like a journey where I was called to the meaning I was contemplating, as if I belonged there. Even after completing the mural and returning home, I’ve kept ruminating on this.
All ten pieces in this new OBJECT series also depict stones I brought back from Morocco and stones from Japan.
The sun rises and sets each day. Please let your thoughts wander to what truly exists beyond it.

Also making its debut is a collaborative piece conceived in Morocco with Hideyuki Katsumata, who also participated in JIDAR from Japan, and painted after our return. Please enjoy!

Born in Oita Prefecture in 1988, painter based in Shiga Prefecture.
Primarily focusing on the colors and forms of materials found in nature and the landscapes containing them, as well as light reflection and refraction,
he intertwines collected images on the canvas and abstractly binds them together.
Recent series include ‘shape of lights’, where images of light are layered onto shaped canvases,
and ‘OBJECT’, where stones collected as a lifelong pursuit are combined and depicted as new objects.
