手と花では2026年3月21日(土)〜4月5日(日)の会期でロベルト “アランチーニ” キドニー＆ケニー “ロドリゲス” ハマグチによる二人展「ANGEL EYES」を開催いたします。
伝説的Hi-NRGユニット「エンジェル・アイズ」が80年代の大ヒット曲『Body to Body』をはじめ、彼らのルーツと軌跡をたどる歴代のレコード＆カバーアートを大公開いたします！

ロベルト “アランチーニ” キドニーとケニー “ロドリゲス” ハマグチが初めて出会ったのは、1979年のイビサでのバカンス中の出来事。太陽が眩しいリゾート地での偶然の出会いが、後にダンスミュージック界隈で話題を攫うカルト・ストーリーの発端となるとは、そのときは誰も想像していなかった。当時、英国と日本でプログレッシブ・ロックのソロ活動をしていた二人は、音楽的にはまったく別のフィールドにいた。しかし、イビサで著名人が集う「Dulce Boom Boom Bar」でウイスキーを交わし合った長い夜に意気投合し、「ANGEL EYES」という奇跡のケミストリーが誕生する。

やがて二人は、当時まだ熱を帯びていたディスコのビートに強く惹かれ、大きく方向転換。南イタリアへ移り住み、ネオン煌めくクラブカルチャーにどっぷり浸かりながら、Galaxy Vesuvioというナイトクラブで毎週末レジデンシーDJをこなすようになる。そこで運命的な出会いが起こる。たまたま休暇で来ていたジョルジオ・モロダーが彼らの荒削りなパフォーマンスに一目惚れし、ミュンヘンのクラブDynamo Tanzbarで自身がオーガナイズするイベントへの出演を依頼。ところが、その日はケニー最愛のおばあちゃんの誕生日パーティと丸かぶりで断念。なんともあと一歩で有名になり損ね、結局チャンスは流れてしまった。

それでも二人はめげずにスタジオで制作を続ける。そこから何年も試行錯誤を重ね、少しクセのある独特のHi-NRG／イタロ・ディスコのハイブリッド・サウンドを作り上げていく。ドラマチックでシンセたっぷり、ド派手でエモーショナルな楽曲を多く制作していく。ANGEL EYES名義として、イタリアからいくつかレコードを発表し、アンダーグラウンドではそこそこの支持を築いたが、大ヒットにはなかなか届かなかった。

流れが変わったのは1983年8月。レコード探しの“巡礼”として訪れたニューヨークでのこと。Electric Confessionというカクテルバーで、当時Smash Hits誌の記者だったニール・テナント（PET SHOP BOYS）と知り合い、そこからHi-NRGの重要人物ボビー・オーランドことBOBBY Oを紹介される。オーランドは彼らのデモ曲「Body to Body」に即座に目をつけ、壮大な12インチ・シングルへと仕上げた。1984年にリリースされたその曲は、UKポップチャートで143位を記録。大ヒットとは言えないが、勢いよく前進するきっかけとなった。

さらに、B面に収録されていた「Body to Body」のイタロリミックスが思わぬ広がりを見せる。日本の大物CMディレクター松永大郷の耳に止まり、1985年に発表されたMaxellカセットテープのテレビCMに起用されたことで、東京・新宿のディスコシーンから火が付き、空前の大ヒットとなる。「Body to Body」は日本の若者を中心にアンダーグラウンドディスコシーンの定番アンセムと化したのだ。

その後は『チューリップ・ボーイ』『Flash Beat』『放課後C・L・U・B』といった若者向け音楽雑誌に登場し、『スーパー☆ソニック☆サーカス』『ホット! ほっと! サンDAY』などの深夜番組にも出演。1987年にはついに東京へ移住を決意。そこで伝説的DJ／プロデューサー、バリー・ゴールドと出会い、長期的にわたるクリエイティブなパートナーシップをスタート。バリーのプロデュースによってサウンドも知名度も一気に幅を広げ、日本のみならずアジア全域でも人気を高めていった。

イビサでの偶然の出会いから、ネオン瞬く新宿での名声へ。ANGEL EYESとは、チャートを制覇することよりもむしろ、GROOVEそして終わらない夜への情熱を誓い合ったロベルトとケニーが、美しくド派手なHi-NRGサウンドを追求する壮大な物語なのである。

Roberto ‘Arancini’ Kidney and Kenny ‘Rodriguez’ Hamaguchi first crossed paths on holiday in Ibiza in 1979 — a sun-drenched collision that would quietly spark one of dance music’s most unlikely cult stories. At the time, both were pursuing solo progressive rock careers in England and Japan respectively, operating in very different corners of the musical spectrum. But after a long, whisky-fuelled night at the Dulce Boom Boom Bar, the idea for Angel Eyes was born.

Drawn by the pulse of late-era disco, the duo pivoted hard. They relocated to southern Italy, immersing themselves in the region’s neon-lit club culture and performing weekend residencies at the Galaxy Vesuvio nightclub. It was there that fate — and a holidaying Giorgio Moroder — briefly intervened. Impressed by their raw energy, Moroder invited them to perform at an event he was curating at the Dynamo Tanzbar in Munich. In true almost-famous fashion, however, the date clashed with the birthday of Kenny’s beloved grandmother, and the opportunity slipped away. Undeterred, Kidney and Hamaguchi retreated into the studio. Years of experimentation followed, gradually shaping a distinctive, slightly twisted Hi-NRG/Italo hybrid — dramatic, synthetic and unabashedly emotional. Releasing a string of records in Italy under the name Angel Eyes, they built a modest underground following, though mainstream chart success remained elusive.

Everything shifted in August 1983 during a record-buying pilgrimage to New York. At the Electric Confession cocktail bar, they met then-Smash Hits journalist Neil Tennant, who in turn introduced them to Hi-NRG architect Bobby Orlando. Orlando immediately honed in on their raw demo “Body to Body,” transforming it into a throbbing, epic 12-inch single. Released in 1984, it climbed to No. 143 on the UK pop charts — hardly a smash, but enough to ignite momentum. The B-side, a more Italo-tinged remix of “Body to Body,” travelled further than anyone expected. It caught the attention of Japanese commercial director Daigo Matsunaga, who featured it in a now-legendary 1985 Maxell audio cassette television advert. The exposure propelled the track into Tokyo’s after-hours Shinjuku disco scene, where it became an underground anthem.

Suddenly, Angel Eyes were fixtures in youth and music magazines such as Tulip Boy, Flash Beat and Hōkago C・L・U・B, and appeared on cult television shows including SUPER☆SONIC☆CIRCUS and Hot! Hot! Sunday. By 1987, Japan was calling in earnest. The duo relocated to Tokyo, beginning a long-standing creative partnership with the fabled DJ and producer Barry Gold, who would elevate their sound — and their profile — to new levels of popularity across Asia.

From a chance meeting in Ibiza to neon-lit notoriety in Shinjuku, the story of Angel Eyes is less about chart domination and more about devotion: to the groove, to the night, and to the beautifully excessive promise of Hi-NRG.
